TCS girls win 3-1, stay alive for top seed

Home games with Wendell today

With a 3-1 win Wednesday at Bliss, coach Kelly Feldman's Community School girls' varsity soccer team kept its hopes alive for the top seed in next week's High Desert Soccer Conference (HDSC) tournament.

Senior Erica Eshman (19 goals) scored twice and junior Freya Dickey added a single goal from Ellie Swanson as the Cutthroats (8-4-1, 7-1-1 league, 25 points) extended their league winning streak to eight games.

The Cutthroats got a pleasant surprise learning that league-leading Filer (10-2-4, 8-0-2 league, 26 points) played visiting Declo (1-10-3, 1-7-2) to a scoreless draw Wednesday. And it put a lot of weight on three upcoming league games to determine the top seeds in the HDSC meet starting Oct. 10.

Feldman's squad will host Wendell (5-7-1, 5-5-0) today, Friday at Sagewillow Farms, and then travel to Buhl (8-2-1, 7-2-0) Monday and host Declo on Wednesday in the season finale. And on Tuesday, Filer will entertain defending league champion Buhl in another pivotal HDSC contest.

TCS boys fall 4-1 to Bliss

Wedged into the middle of the HDSC pack this year, coach Richard Whitelaw's Cutthroat boys (3-6-3, 2-4-3, 9 points) are playing for the fourth tournament seed and the first-round home game that was denied the TCS boys in 2008.

Bliss junior striker Luis Cortez (42 goals season) was unstoppable again Wednesday with three goals and Bears senior goalkeeper Javier Beltran was a force on "Senior Night." Senior Wyatt Bunce scored the Cutthroat goal. Senior defender Tyler Davis was Whitelaw's "Man of the Match."

The Cutthroats host Wendell (6-3-3, 6-2-2, 20 points) today, Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Browning Field and then finish up against their two main rivals for the fourth-seed—Buhl (2-7-1, 2-6-1) on Monday and Declo (2-9-1, 2-7-1) on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Buhl lost 6-1 at home to Wendell Wednesday. The league playoffs begin Oct. 10.
