Snow?

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

Well, that was fun. Thirty days of rain, six weeks of summer, two weeks of fall and now winter for the next nine months. I never warmed up this year. What's the deal? What happened to the four-season resort? Has the world gone awry? Based on these figures, in five years we'll have 11 months of winter, two weeks of rain, a week of summer and a fall weekend. Hey, the aspens never fully turned!

Get rid of the golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools and softball leagues. We've gone arctic, folks. Put in snowmobile tracks, cross-country trails and build another mountain. It's wintertime! Get out the long johns and the shovel, pull out the scarf and the cap, put on the storm windows and turn up the heat. This is going to be a long one.

Geese are flying south. I haven't seen a robin all week. The days are getting shorter, the shadows longer. Red holly, green evergreen trees and blue snowflakes are waiting just around the corner as I look at a cold, white moon against a navy-blue sky.

Of course, I could be wrong. We could have an Indian summer. This weather change could just be temporarily chaotic. It could just be one last blast of mayhem in this challenging year. Someone told me that it snows in the Sawtooths at some point every day. Maybe we're all just madly confused. The Santa we're imagining might just be Rob Santa at Sturtevants cleaning out his garage.

So, I'm going to relax now and stop projecting. I'll just deal with the weather on its own terms. Today is another day whether there's snow on the hills or mud in the streets. Anyway, Mercury is out of retrograde. It's smooth sailing now.

Nice talking to you ...
