Candidates face off

The issues are hot, the weather is not, so tonight will be perfect for the 10-candidate face-off at the Pizza and Politics election forum at 6:30 at Ketchum City Hall.

New hotels, downtown improvements, an agreement with the county to provide police services and what the city should do to bolster business are just a few of the items likely to be debated.

It's an event Ketchum voters shouldn't miss. This newspaper organizes it with the help of other sponsors, and we encourage voters to come and ask questions.

There's nothing like seeing and questioning candidates in person. Candidates will be on the spot in front of people whom they wish to serve and engaged with candidates with whom they may disagree.

The event will give voters a good idea of where candidates stand on city issues and how they might work together if elected.

Every election is important, but the fact that this election is taking place in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression makes this election critical to everyone in the area.

For the first time, the forums in Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue will be videotaped and available for viewing 24/7 at www.mtexpress.com within a day or so after the event, thanks to sponsorship by Western States Geothermal LLC.

Voters will hear from candidates who want to spur economic development and others who would prefer a more passive approach to the economic storm that is raging in the valley.

A lot is on the line. Finding good public leadership is essential for success. We urge voters to attend and then decide.
