‘Walk the Walk’

March against domestic violence set for Saturday

Domestic violence is an issue that many do not want to talk about or address. Yet, it happens, and the Wood River Valley community is no exception.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month—observed annually in October—advocates public and prevention awareness and education.

The Hailey-based Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault will commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month with their second annual "Walk the Walk" event on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. at Ketchum Town Plaza Park, across from Atkinsons' Market. Participants will walk from the park up Sun Valley Road to Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church and back.

"We will give a talk while everyone is putting on their shoes," said shelter manager Teri Beck. "Last year it was delightful to see the men who walked in heels because they are opposed to domestic violence."

The Advocates will also launch their White Ribbon Campaign. Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge by men to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls.

"Domestic violence is an unattractive side of family life," Executive Director Patricia Swartling said. "It is the cause of many social problems and costs lots of money, which is why prevention is a huge factor."

The Advocates' services include a sexual assault team that supports victims at the hospital. Victims are also offered counseling and ongoing support for dealing with the emotional trauma of sexual assault and assistance navigating the legal system.

"The general population is aware that there are services and there are options to help people with limited resources," Swartling said. "I am always amazed when people have never heard of us."

The event is free with refreshments and "high heels for the men to wear for those who dare."
