Health plan hurts seniors

Pat Murphy's Sept. 2 tribute to Ted Kennedy omitted a very important part of his life—the miracle of approximately six months of quality extra life. Through "cutting edge" medical technology and cancer treatments at Duke University and Massachusetts General Hospital, among others, the cancer was contained so the senator could have quality life extension.

Presumably, all of the senator's medical bills were paid by the extraordinary "Cadillac" health care benefit plan given to senators and congressmen. Too bad for John Q. Public in similar circumstances. As drafted, the Pelosi/Obama health care plan would probably exclude from further medical treatment a 76-year-old, obese, male substance abuser. Probably the only response from a "health panel" would be the phone numbers of a hospice organization and a funeral home.

Two points must be made clear to our elected federal representatives. One, they will get the same health care plan they are trying to foist on us; we will no longer accept a double standard. And two, seniors should not be discriminated against, excluded or have health care rationed to benefit freeloaders.
