Big attack in Wood River’s 10-0 win over ‘Hawks

Girls stay hot in Hailey

Wood River High School senior Maddie-Kate Currie knows how to put the ball in the net, having scored 8 goals for The Community School in 2006 and 2007, and 5 goals in two years playing for Wood River in 2008 and 2009. Currie, one of three seniors on this year’s team, was also one of seven scorers in Wednesday’s 10-0 home win over Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls. Some new varsity players and some familiar faces joined the scoring parade Wednesday as the Wood River High School girls' soccer team cruised past the Canyon Ridge Riverhawks 10-0 at South Valley Sports Complex field in Hailey.

The lopsided victory kept coach Jenni Conrad's Wood River team (5-2-1, 5-0-0 league) undefeated in league play. The Wolverines are unbeaten in their last six outings, including four straight conference wins by a 28-2 score. Canyon Ridge fell to 1-10-1, 1-4-0 in league.

Teagen Palmer, Wood River's sophomore striker who was The Community School's top scorer last fall, tallied her first three-goal hat trick for the Wolverines. Meanwhile, leading scorer Tanner Dredge (13 goals season) added two goals in limited playing time.

Scoring their first goals of the season were junior stopper Taylor Hayes and sophomore Erin Murphy. Ashley Hesteness, Nicole Roos and Maddie Kate Currie added singles.

Wood River built a 7-0 lead at half and out-shot Canyon Ridge 43-0 with a 6-0 corner-kick advantage. The busiest person on the field was Riverhawks goalkeeper Raven Oesteriein (21 saves).

Dredge scored twice in the first 20 minutes, her second goal on an assist from Ali Appleton. Hayes scored from the top of the box, from K.T. Martinez. Megan Morrell passed to Hesteness for the fourth goal at 35 minutes, then Palmer made a penalty kick and scored the sixth goal, from Appleton. Currie made it 7-0 right before the half.

A pretty one-timer from 26 yards by Roos at 56 minutes changed the score to 8-0. Palmer finished her hat trick from the top of the box on a pass from Shaylee Foley. Palmer's beautiful cross pass was chased down by the speedy Erin Murphy, who punched it home for the 10-0 final.

Wood River hosts Jerome (3-7-0, 3-2-0) Monday, Sept. 21 as the Wolverines try to improve upon their 3-2 win at Jerome Sept. 2. Led by leading scorer Aubrey Callen, Jerome beat Burley (0-8-1, 0-4-1 league) by a 5-1 score Wednesday in another Great Basin Conference game.
