Parade Bits

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

I had a little bit of fun announcing the Wagon Days parade last Saturday. It was a wonderful day ...

"And here comes the Meridian 'Ambush of the Tigers' Marching Band. One of the most savage school mascot names I have ever heard. They'll be playing "Tiger Rag," "Louie, Louie" and "Hey, A Tiger Is Eating My Face!"

"And Earl Loomis' miniature ponies are currently stabled in the glove compartment of his truck!"

"Here comes the band that originally started in 1977 with some performers hoping to graduate this coming spring. A real tribute to a high school marching band with the average age of 48, although the trombone player looks like he's pushing 60."

"And, now say hello to Ed and Lois Cant, a wonderful couple who have never let their name stop them!"

"Joe Cannon? He's alive? Love that guy!"

"And here's one of the princesses of the 2009 Heritage Court, Alice Schernthanner, still lively and alert after all of these years. Just yesterday she said to me: 'Who ... who are you?"

"And remember the Trailing of the Sheep Parade on Oct. 12th at noon! A new entry this year following the band of 1,500 sheep will be the Phantom Wolf Pack. It promises to be one of the most unforgettable afternoons you have ever witnessed. Bring the kids. Buy a tag!"

"And here comes the Newlyweds' Wagon! Sure, you're happy now! Next year Dad won't be driving. Hubby will and the Bride will be in Reno. Get out of here!"

It's all about the fun, isn't it? Everyone was a good sport. It was great to see Clint Stennett and Earl Holding looking well. You gotta love Wagon Days. It's our town's time to shine.

Nice talking to you.
