Fish aim to bounce back against Riverhawks

Boys soccer Saturday in SV

Community School boys' varsity soccer coach Richard Whitelaw would be the first to say that the Bliss Bears and Gooding Senators are the teams to beat this fall in the High Desert Soccer Conference.

Whitelaw's banged-up Cutthroats saw both Bliss and Gooding on back-to-back days this week—and the results weren't pretty. Two lopsided losses put Whitelaw's quest for his 200th TCS coaching victory on hold for a few more days.

Tuesday at Browning Field in Elkhorn, Bliss crafty junior striker Luis Cortez scored an incredible six goals, three in each half, as the Bears whipped the Cutthroats 7-1. "We were thumped," said Whitelaw.

Cortez set the stage for his big show by beating the Cutthroat defense and scoring on pinpoint shots at 13 minutes and 24 minutes. Serving up the Bliss passes all game was senior Alex Cortez, who crossed a ball to Luis Cortez for a beautiful header at 26 minutes, 3-0.

Luis Cortez tallied two more header goals in the second half and Alex Cortez added a single goal for Bliss (4-1-0, 3-1-0 league), which was coming in off a 5-3 loss to Gooding last Friday. Gooding (5-0-0) and Wendell (3-1-1) are the other teams ahead of The Community School in the league standings.

Senior captain Tanner Flanigan scored in the second half for the Fish, and sophomore forward Cooper Hanley was "Man of the Match." In Wednesday's 4-0 loss at Gooding, the game was tied 0-0 at half. "Man of the Match" was senior Tyler Davis.

Whitelaw (199-83-26 in 18 years) said about the Gooding game, "It was nil-nil at half and we were still in the game. We'll keep plugging away. We've got to remain positive."

It was tough to stay positive this week with the tough competition and injuries to junior John Chrysikopoulos (broken collarbone, out for the season) and sophomore Cassidy Carson (out for at least a month, partially torn PCL knee injury).

Still, the Cutthroats (2-4-1, 1-3-1 league) have a home game coming up Saturday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. against the 4A Canyon Ridge Riverhawks from Twin Falls (1-4-2, 0-1-1 Great Basin).

The Riverhawks beat Filer 3-1 at home Sept. 3 and lost 3-0 at Burley Wednesday. On Tuesday, Sept. 15, the Fish travel to Declo (1-5-0, 1-3-0) for another High Desert league contest.
