First league soccer win for Hailey boys

WRHS rallies past Minico 3-1 in Rupert

Wood River High School senior Luis "Freddy" Tamayo had been doing a lot of excellent set-up work with his clever passes prior to Wednesday's Great Basin Conference league game against Minico in Rupert.

But Tamayo hadn't yet scored a goal for the Wolverines of coach Luis Monjaras.

Cancel that.

Tamayo scored three big goals as Wood River (3-1-1, 1-1-0 league) posted its second consecutive road victory, this time by a 3-1 score over Minico (1-5-2, 0-1-1 league). And to hear coach Monjaras tell it, his team conquered adversity to prevail.

"It was a very controversial game," said Monjaras, referring to some of the officiating decisions and non-decisions. "But the boys didn't let down and fought through it. Our defense played pretty well."

Minico, coming off Friday's 7-1 loss to Jerome, got on the board with a Jorge Carillo penalty kick at three minutes. Senior defender Cody Phelps assisted on Tamayo's first goal at the five-minute mark. Tamayo converted a breakaway at 33 minutes for the eventual game winner and a 2-1 lead at half.

Junior Bryan Donoso assisted Tamayo's third goal in the second half. Coach Monjaras said, "We controlled about 90% of the game, had 18 shots and kept the ball in their half of the field most of the time. We had three corner kicks, two direct kicks and three indirect kicks."

Wood River senior goalkeeper Colter Brehmer (3 saves) enjoyed a quiet day.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, Wood River gets its first look at coach Wes Nyblade's Burley squad, at 11 a.m. on the Hailey pitch.

"It should be a good game. I'm happy it's here at home," said Monjaras.

Burley (4-1-1, 1-1-0 league) won 3-0 over Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls Wednesday. The only Bobcats loss was 1-0 to Twin Falls. On Monday, Sept. 14, Wood River entertains Twin Falls (2-4-0, 1-1-0) and former Wolverine player Chris De La Cruz at 4:30 p.m. at South Valley Sports Complex in Hailey. Jerome (7-0-0, 3-0-0) whipped Twin Falls 9-4 Wednesday.
