Wolverine girls tame Spartans 7-2 in Basin

Dredge scores four, big game coming at Twin

Over three seasons, opposing defenses have come to fear the burst of speed that Wood River junior Tanner Dredge uses to split the seams and score goals. Here, Dredge (4 goals) flies past Minico defender Araciel Santana (#20) during Wood River’s 7-2 victory in Hailey. Photo by David N. Seelig

Junior Tanner Dredge scored four goals and vaulted into the fourth spot on Wood River High School's all-time scoring list Wednesday as the Wolverines handled Minico 7-2 in Great Basin Conference girls' soccer action in Hailey.

Dredge, who has scored at least once in 19 of the last 26 Hailey soccer games, completed the 11th three-goal hat trick of her three-year Wolverine career with just 17 minutes gone in Wednesday's league game at South Valley Sports Complex.

She added her fourth goal at 68 minutes as Wood River (2-2-1, 2-0-0) continued its long dominance of Minico in soccer, a record that stands at 25-0. Minico (2-4-1, 1-1-0) had scored only three goals against Wood River in the previous 24 meetings, so Wednesday's two Spartan goals represented progress.

Progress for coach Jenni Conrad's Wolverines came in the form of a 48-2 shooting advantage. Senior Ellen Davis (1 assist) scored her first goal of the season at 10 minutes for an early 3-0 lead. Senior co-captain Ashley Hesteness also scored her first goal at 30 minutes.

Sophomore Teagen Palmer tallied her first goal as a Wood River player late in the game to end the scoring. Sophomore Kaitana Martinez added two assists. Minico scored once against Hailey junior goalkeeper Madison Gove and one time against sophomore keeper Cheyenne Swanson.

It was the sixth time that Dredge has scored four or more goals in a game, including five times last season. With 61 goals in three seasons, she moved into fourth place past Robin Kearns (59). Next target is Chapman College player Aimee Evans, with 75.

Wood River travels to Burley Saturday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. for another league contest. Burley (0-6-0, 0-2-0 league) fell 2-0 to Canyon Ridge in Twin Falls Wednesday afternoon. Wood River also leads its all-time series against Burley 25-0.

A big game arrives Monday, Sept. 14 when Wood River travels to Twin Falls for the first of two meetings between the two expected frontrunners in the Great Basin race. Twin Falls (4-1-2, 2-0-0 league) captured a 5-0 Great Basin win at Jerome (0-7-0, 0-2-0) on Wednesday.
