Competition broadens in north valley

2 more candidates file in Sun Valley, 2 more in Ketchum

Two more candidates filed to run for Sun Valley City Council at the eleventh hour on Friday, bringing the total to five.

Milt Adam and David Baravetto were the last to file for election and will be competing with incumbent council President Nils Ribi, retired scientist Bob Youngman and Sun Valley Resort front desk clerk Stephen Poindexter for the two open seats. Since it's an open election, the two candidates with the most votes will win.

Adam, a 74-year-old retired mechanical design engineer in the field of nuclear research, has had a home in Sun Valley since 1975 and became a resident and voter in 1986. He has become a regular at council meetings and said his plans for office include an overall view but no specifics.

"I don't have any particular bullet points," Adam said. "I don't have this and that, and that other thing."

He said he wants to maintain Sun Valley as it is and handle what comes along using "independent and analytical thinking." His overall interest is to keep Sun Valley sustainable and independent.

Adam is Sun Valley representative on the Blaine County Housing Authority, which seeks to provide affordable housing.

The other political hopeful, 68-year-old architect David Barovetto, is running for some of the same reasons. He also wants to maintain Sun Valley as it stands.

"I'd like to see it continue on as the nice place I've enjoyed for the last 40 years," he said.

Barovetto said he wants to keep the city running along its clean, sustainable path. He said no urgent issues besides the budget currently face the city, but he has the experience in problem solving to handle problems that may arise.

"Being an architect takes a lot of careful planning," Barovetto said. "It's a matter of taking the time and making good decisions. That's what being a council member takes."

Like Adam, Barovetto has attended numerous council meetings as an interested citizen.

"It's interesting to make comments and have the people behind the tables make the decisions based on what you tell them," he said. "I'd like to be the one listening."

Ketchum has 2 new candidates

Carter Ramsay and Jan Hegewald were the final candidates to file for the Ketchum City Council election before the Sept. 4 deadline. However, the city had no contact information for them and neither could be found. Already reported as running are incumbent council President Baird Gourlay and challengers Lee Chubb, Clarion Inn owner Peter Lewis, former Mayor Ed Simon and Rickshaw restaurant owner Nina Jonas. The mayoral race includes incumbent Randy Hall, Phyllis Shafran and Mickey Garcia.
