Symphony guest conductor Kunzel dies

Erich Kunzel, Sun Valley Summer Symphony guest pops conductor for six years, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Bar Harbor, Maine, at age 74.

Kunzel died from cancer of the pancreas, liver and colon.

He worked with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for more than four decades. In 1997, the symphony trustees established the Cincinnati Pops, and named Kunzel as its conductor. After leading the Cincinnati Pops to international acclaim, Kunzel last appeared in Sun Valley in August 2008.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Brunhilde.
