There were intriguing story lines Saturday, Aug. 22 when The Elephant's Perch of Ketchum staged its annual Shop to the Top climb of Baldy.

Breaking the 11-year-old six-mile "Race Class" mark were two out-of-towners—winner Simon Gutierrez, 43, of Alamosa, Colo. and runner-up Matthew Byrne, 34, of Philadelphia, Pa. Their times were 53:19 and 54:29 among the 47 "Race Class" climbers.

Hailey's Karl Van Calcar held the previous record of 56:45 established in 1998.

Jennifer Schwartz, 39, of Hailey captured her second consecutive "Sport Class" triumph in a field of 47 over five miles with a time of 1.10:13, over four minutes better than her winning time of 2008.

Ketchum's Del Pletcher, 65, was right behind Schwartz in 1.12:38. He was among 15 "Sport" climbers ages 60-and-over, or 32% of the field. At the other end of the age spectrum, 10-year-old Henry Raff was the fourth "Sport" in 1.22:15.
