I've been living in the area for 10 years and have been watching the airport debate closely for much of that time. I can no longer place any faith that the journalism of Pat Murphy is objective on the subject. Every article Mr. Murphy writes feels partisan and barbed. This is "blogism," not honorable journalism.
The article in the Aug. 7 issue, "FAA: Friedman will close for safety reasons," pushes a foregone conclusion where I believe there is still ongoing process. Safety is clearly a central issue in this debate, but I don't believe the FAA is saying that Friedman is unsafe. If they were, they would stop operations today.
I think FAA staff are acting like Bureau of Reclamation staff did in the first half of the 20th century. Reclamation never met a dam in the West that they didn't want to build with taxpayer money, and today's FAA never met an airport they didn't want to build with taxpayer money. I'm not convinced that this isn't a $100 million jobs program for FAA staff.
