I write to thank you for including the details of seat belt use by all involved in the recent traffic crash at Timmerman Junction, reported in your July 15 edition. I compliment Express staff writer Terry Smith on a thought-provoking and thorough report. The result of this crash demonstrates the truly protective value of using seat belts installed in the rig.
I share your opinion expressed in a follow-up opinion piece in which you state the view that "Seatbelts saved their lives." The circumstances here—a high-capacity van carrying a big crew of workers traveling at highway speed hitting a fully occupied car driven by a visitor from out of state—presented the scenario for a potential mass disaster.
While it would have been better to prevent this crash, it is also useful to mitigate the harm done once it is happening. Seat belts are a powerful tool for protecting people in a crash. The happy outcome is terrific.
We enclose a "Traffic Safety Excellence" award for Terry Smith, for your news coverage and another to the Idaho Mountain Express for the opinion piece concerning this incident. It is our pleasure to recognize your thorough coverage of this interesting event.
