The Sun Valley Figure Skating Club is putting the finishing touches on its "Fashions on Ice" show Thursday, Aug. 6 starting at 5 p.m. at Sun Valley Outdoor Rink. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 youth, and there will be a silent auction.

Many of the same young skaters showed their talents and improved their skills during the four-day, 43rd annual Sun Valley Summer Figure Skating Championships hosted by the SVFSC July 16-19.

The 2009 Sun Valley Summer Championships attracted 160 competitive skaters from 37 figure skating clubs across the nation. The popular competition ran on volunteer hours contributed by every older skater and skater/parent in the club, as well as the help of many visiting parents and skating fans in our community.

It offered a Basic Skills competition plus U.S. Figure Skating-regulated events in Free Skate, Compulsories and Solo Dance judged by USFS judges like locals David Hold, Lolly Jensen and Barbara Stuns.

Since it was a non-qualifying competition, the SVFSC could offer non-traditional events that allowed more skaters to enjoy competition and test their skills in Artistic, Interpretive Improvisation, and Showcase.

First-place skaters included Shayna Mollenberg, Samantha Bunting, Travis Flynt, Tara Ware, Antonia Avery, Tallulah Gilbreath, Caroline Hold, Marcella Fisher, Claire Siderman, Sheldon Gentling, Nicole Pratt, Emma Stuessi and Alex Stuessi.

After three days of serious competition, "Showcase Sunday" was a fun and welcome finale to the Summer Championships. Showcase allowed costumes, props, and programs whimsical or comic in nature.

For instance, Community School seventh grader Claire Siderman entertained the audience with a slapstick rendition of a cleaning woman who has an accident with a bucket. She won the "Best Overall Showcase Trophy" for Nontest through Pre-Juvenile level skaters.

Here are the U.S.F.S. tests passed by local skaters July 19. The next testing sessions are Aug. 22-23:
