The eighth annual Whit Henry Memorial Galena Grinder mountain-bike race lived up to its reputation as a true grind this weekend, challenging about 150 racers to 6,000 feet of climbs in dusty and windy conditions. Racers came across the finish line spattered in mud from creek crossings, but with no complaints. They knew what they were getting themselves into. Competing pros had a shot at $1,200 in prize money.
Sixty-three marathon racers took an extra lap on the 21-mile course that skirted the peaks behind Galena Lodge north of Ketchum. Six of the marathon starters failed to complete the course.
"I feel great now that I'm warmed up and I know where I am going," said Elephant's Perch rider Roger Mankus as he finished the first lap of the marathon.
Another marathon racer said, "I'm only halfway finished, but totally done."
Race director Marc Driver said local riders nearly swept the field.
"The top five in each category were local-heavy," he said.
Among them was Tracy Anderson, who would have earned a few bucks if he had been a professional rider. He beat pro Nathan Miller by three minutes and pro Shannon Bofelli by 15 minutes to deliver the fastest time of three hours, 47 minutes.
Locals Jim Santa and Mike Hattrup won in their age 40-49 categories, as did Collin Rogers for the his 19-29 category.
Driver was especially pleased with the "Trail Blazers" ages 10 and under, who mistakenly joined a mass start of older riders for a grueling 4.5-mile loop.
"They definitely rode the hardest course they have ever ridden," he said. "What's amazing is that they did it, came back and loved it."
Among the Trailblazers, local brother and sister combo Austin and Isabella Bouret took first in their categories.
Junior category rider Ryan Campagnaone was the first to reach the finish about noon on Saturday.
