Lefty’s tunes up with Ketchum tourney win

Men’s soccer at Atkinson Park

Strong defense paved the way for the Lefty's F.C. men's soccer team Saturday during a 14-team tournament sponsored by the San Lorenzo squad at Ketchum's Atkinson Park.

Lefty's won another home tournament with a 2-1 victory over Magic United in the championship game of the one-day tournament. In the semi-finals, it was Lefty's beating La Alianza in penalty kicks.

Teams from the Wood River Valley, Jerome, Twin Falls and the Magic Valley competed for $300 cash. Format was 50-minute games. Unfortunately, host San Lorenzo didn't make the semi-finals though it beat Callpa and tied Revolution.

Lefty's won against Union Progresso and Manchester to make it to the semi-finals.

In the final against Magic United, Lefty's jumped to a 1-0 lead when both Ryon Campbell and Eric Hall muscled in a corner kick from John Campbell. A few minutes later, on another corner kick, the ball popped out to new player Christy who crushed a full volley into the net from just inside the 18. Magic United scored on a second-half direct kick but the game ended with the score 2-1.

Certainly the MVPs of the tournament were players on the Lefty's defense. Backs Nate Schwing, Josh Stanek, Ryon Campbell and Greg Gvozdas comprised an impenetrable force. Goalie Tyler Chandler was exceptional as well, allowing just one goal in four games.

Lefty's F.C. travels to Jackson Hole (Wyo.) for the annual Jackson tournament July 24-25.

Then, Lefty's F.C. and San Lorenzo gear up for the 33rd annual Ketchum Classic men's tournament Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 1-2 at Atkinson Park. Boise Blast was last year's Ketchum Classic winner—its fifth title here in six years.
