Powerlifter Cadavona wins class, sets record in Portland

Wilma headed to nationals

Powerlifting gives Wilma Cadavona of Bellevue a big lift.

She said this week, "I still get butterflies at a competition. And I still enjoy every minute of it."

It shows. It certainly showed during the WABDL Goodson Honda National Bench Press and Deadlift Championships presented by Welker Engineering and Rocky McCullough Saturday, June 13 at the Shilo Inn Airport Hotel in Portland, Ore.

Cadavona, 56, a Wood River Valley resident for 20 years, won the Masters Women's 54-60 198-pound division at Portland and thus qualified for the World Championships Oct. 27-Nov. 1 at the Peppermill Hotel in Reno, Nev. She will be 57 when competes at Reno in October.

Her successful bench presses at Portland were 159.5 pounds on her second of three attempts, and 170.2 pounds on her third attempt. That 170.2 broke Cadavona's state record and established a new standard.

Originally from the Hawaiian island of Kauai, Cadavona is a three-time Idaho state champion who first competed at age 46. She relishes the benefits of weight training.

Her greatest success came at a 2000 world championship event in Las Vegas when she set three world records for her age and weight in all three powerlifting events—squat, bench press and dead lift.
