Riding for the Durance/Colango team out of Ketchum's Durance Cycleworks, Patty Puz and Richard Feldman returned to Idaho last week after competing in the USA Cycling Masters Road Championships. The individual time trial championships were staged July 1 at Louisville, Ky.
Puz, 70, from Sun Valley, won her third national championship jersey by capturing the Masters Women 70-plus time trial with a time of 38:06. It was 3:45 faster than the second-place finisher in her class. Puz was the Utah State time trial silver medalist in a June 6 tune-up.
Feldman, 40, a former national and world time trial champion, narrowly missed winning yet another jersey in the Masters Men 40-44 time trial. He finished second in his group by the smallest of margins. Feldman's time of 29:43 for the 25.8-kilometer (15-mile) distance trailed only Men's 40-44 winner Chris Lyman, 40, of Napa, Ca., 29:42.5.
Nevertheless Feldman had the fourth-best time overall among Masters men numbering over 200 racers at Louisville. He was second of 43 racers in Men's 40-44. Feldman had won the Utah State time trial championship with a 36:36 time back on June 6.
Said Puz, "It was a long drive to and from nationals but worth it!"
