The Fourth means jousting at Guy Coles Park

Concrete rodeo skateboarders back in town

Some of the best skateboarders in the Intermountain region spent their Fourth of July holiday at Ketchum's Guy Coles Skate Park as part of the Concrete Rodeo's three-day Idaho holiday visit to Buhl, Ketchum and McCall.

Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Concrete Rodeo has 42 events starting May 9 in St. George, Utah and running through Aug. 15 in South Jordan, Utah. Through July 9, the tour's organizers had traveled over 11,000 miles in 60 days bringing such events to communities like Ketchum.

In Ketchum there were 31 men and boys, and three women competing in age class runs and also in the jousting finals that determined final placings for the one-day meet.

Winning the women's jousting finals was Aspyn Bowles, 12, of Twin Falls. She defeated Josie Layton, 8, of Jerome in the Ketchum jousting finals for the second straight year. In third place was 9-10 year-old competitor Skyler Lakey.

Bellevue's Gene Fairbrother, 17, moved up a couple of spots from last year and placed third overall in the men's jousting finals. The winner was Sam Goodman of Twin Falls over 13-14 class winner Jade Pierce. Locals Quinn Baser, Ben Parker and Mal Prior all made the quarterfinals of the joust.

Skating way beyond his years and making the Round of 16 as the youngest competitor was Jedson Waters, 7, of Hailey. A second grader, Waters came to Ketchum one day after placing fourth of all competitors in points at Buhl. Last year the son of Lamar and Karen Waters was a bronze medalist in Grand National competition.

Here are July 4 age group results for many of the locals:
