Change

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

Like a weary traveler soaked with rain, the Wood River Valley welcomed in a period of sunshine, activity and good will this week. People were out and about again, basking in the warmth and drying up the tears spent upon an endless downpour of frustration brought about by record-setting inclement weather. The struggles of a community briefly eased as the sun and a full lunar eclipse arrived and seemed to restore change and promise to the valley.

Allen and Co. arrived, signaling a sense of order and hope as it has done for so many years. Mr. Allen again bade the financial magnates of the world to join him in paradise for a few days, and with it injected much-needed capital to our empty pockets.

Paradise—that's our home he's talking about. It doesn't seem like it sometimes, does it? Still with all the physical alterations, rising crime and an unbelievably harsh economic climate, we remain strong.

Really, would you want to live anywhere else? Despite hardships and broken dreams, the Wood River Valley remains home to all of us. Even when it gets to the point where some of us feel lost and discouraged, we can look to the beauty of the mountains to fill the emptiness, restore our hearts and prepare for the changes that must come.

It seems the only constant thing is change and to go on we must adapt to it. But, it sure seems easier to do so when the sun is shining.

We have a beautiful home here and we must make it work. My hope is that the sun shines on all of us for the remainder of the year and brings us peace. We need a break.

Nice talking to you.
