Finally, the sun shines on SV holiday tennis

Field of players up to 130 for tourney

Most of the attention Sunday morning focused on the epic Wimbledon men's singles clash between Roger Federer of Switzerland and American hope Andy Roddick.

But the really big news at Sun Valley Tennis Club was the sun finally breaking through after two rain-drenched days of action and inaction at the Lyle Pearson Fourth of July Tennis Championships in Sun Valley.

Tournament director David Perry wasn't complaining too much about the unusual holiday weather. After all, he said the field of 130 players in 212 events was bigger by about 20 players than last July.

But the rain threw a few kinks into scheduling. Friday's torrential downpour washed out matches for the rest of the day about 1 p.m. There was a three-hour delay Saturday due to rain, and Saturday's final matches ended after 9 p.m.

But Sunday was sunny for the final matches of the $1,215 tournament presented by Sun Valley Resort and sponsored by Lyle Pearson of Boise, Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters and Atkinsons'.

Winning Men's Open singles was Marc Pijoan, a 6-4 star from Barcelona, Spain who played for Idaho State University in Pocatello from 2003-08—and was an All-Big Sky Conference player while playing #1 singles for the Bengals from 2005-08. Pijoan is now an assistant coach at ISU.

Women's 4.5 singles winner was Lewis-Clark State College 19-year-old player Rilee Ann Moorhead of Boise, a former Centennial High School star. Moorhead captained Centennial her senior year, made the 5A state tournament for three straight years and won a mixed doubles state title.

Prize money ranged up to $350 for the Men's Open Singles winner and $250 for Men's Doubles kings.
