Clinic will teach new soccer referees

Event set for August, sponsored by Sawtooth United

Sawtooth United F.C. will host a USSF New Referee Clinic in the Wood River Valley on several dates in August.

In an e-mail announcement, SUFC administrator Lynn Chaldu said, "As many of you know, we are in serious need of qualified, local soccer referees. I've talked to many who are interested in becoming certified and I hope you can attend.

"We need six or more people committed, so please get back to me ASAP and I will add you to the list. Sawtooth United will cover your fees for the clinic; $25 for the classes and $40 for certification. The exact location (in Hailey or Ketchum) will be determined and the times might vary slightly."

As of now, dates are Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 11 and 13, from 6-10 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In order to participate in this USSF New Referee Clinic (formally known as a USSF Entry Level Clinic), you must be 12 or older and complete 16 hours of training.

Youth referees are paid according to age group, length of games, type/host of competition and other factors. Center referees earn between $25-$37 per game and ARs about $15-$20 per game. Travel expenses are also covered if you are driving long distances.

If you are interested in officiating high school games, you would need to attend an additional (shorter) high school specific clinic. Contact Chaldu at 726-1160 for more details, or visit
