This week sees the publication of the 25th anniversary edition of the Sun Valley Guide magazine. Known briefly as the Sun Valley Escort, the magazine was founded in the summer of 1984 by Express Publishing, publisher of the Idaho Mountain Express. It celebrates life in the Wood River Valley through stories of the people, places and activities that make it special.
This summer, in honor of its 25th anniversary, the Sun Valley Guide's cover story is an homage to why the valley is a wonderful place to live. "25 Reasons We Live in Sun Valley" is a roll call of the splendors of life here. From the universal ("Because of Baldy" and "Because of Silver Creek") to the individual ("Because of Mile 3 on the Pioneer Cabin Loop" and "Because of Moose Chips, Monkeys and Ashtrays"), this collection of stories and images from the valley's finest local photographers and writers is a unique and humorous insight into a special place to live.
Other topics covered in the Summer edition include a celebration of 30 years of theater in the Wood River Valley, a peek inside the world of the intrepid wheelmen who pepper the highways all summer long and the popular "Sun Valley Guides" feature, profiling three individuals and their slice of Sun Valley life. In this issue, Ollie Cossman, Scott Watanabe and Vincent Carpenter share their stories.
A visitors' guide and lifestyle magazine combined, the Sun Valley Guide is consistently recognized as the best magazine in Idaho by the Idaho Press Club, winning multiple awards each year for its writing and photography. In 2009 it was also recognized by the Western Magazine Publishing Association for the quality of its journalism. Originally published twice a year, the magazine is now a quarterly publication, and includes a spring home and garden issue, Habitat and the new Best of the Valley publication, coming this August.
