Mulling it over

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

Do things happen for a reason? I don't know. I never did. Is life predestined? Are we all under a plan that was set up in the beginning? I think if I knew that, I could relax. If I knew that the things that happened to us were out of our hands, then there would no longer be any reason to worry. The play has already been written. Perform your role well and accept the ups and downs all the way up to the finale. There's no reason to try to figure it out. Stop probing and realize that you're merely fulfilling your destiny. Relax.

I was relaxing in my seat in an airplane on a flight to Las Vegas along with about 200 other folks a few years back when we encountered some turbulence in the air. I sucked in my breath rather noisily and the guy sitting next to me said, "Hey, take it easy. When your number's up, your number's up." I thought about that a while and then said, "Well, what about that old man across the aisle? What if his number is up? What about the flight attendant who's serving our drinks? What if her number is up? How about if mine is ... you're going down even if your number isn't up."

The guy quickly ordered a double, sank back into his seat and never said another word until we landed safely. So, does that mean that a number of people could have the same number that is up at the same time? I don't know. I never did.

A lot of people have told me that they do know. When your number is up, your number is up. "Why?" I ask, and they tell me that everything happens for a reason. It's your destiny. Let it go and leave it alone. They say that you can look back on your life and plainly see that what happened to you has gotten you to this point in life. There were reasons for it, don't you see? Stop thinking so hard.

You know what I think? I think that things happen for no apparent reason at all.

Nice talking to you.
