Baldy lifts set to open this weekend

Sun Valley resort will begin summer chairlift operations on Bald Mountain on Saturday, June 27. Bikes will be allowed on the lifts starting Wednesday, July 1.

The River Run and Lookout Express lifts will take ticket holders from the base of River Run to the top of the mountain. The lifts will run daily beginning at 9 a.m.

Bald Mountain offers abundant opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and taking in alpine vistas.

Lift ticket prices are $15 for adults and $7 for children. All-day lift passes cost $20 for adults and $10 for kids.

For updated mountain reports throughout the summer, call (800) 635-4150 or visit www.sunvalley.com.

Airport meeting set for July 1

The July monthly meeting of the Friedman Memorial Airport Authority has been changed to Wednesday, July 1. The time and place are the same—5:30 p.m., third floor conference room of the Old Blaine County Courthouse.

The agenda also has been altered. The first hour of the meeting will be devoted to discussing the authority's recommendation to the Blaine County Commission on a structure for the governing body of a new airport proposed to replace Friedman.

Commission chairman Larry Schoen and Commissioner Angenie McCleary are scheduled to attend. The third commissioner, Tom Bowman, also wears the hat of vice chairman of the Friedman governing board.

If and when a new airport is built, it presumably would be at one of three sites now being considered in an environmental impact statement study funded by the Federal Aviation Administration. Since unlike Friedman it would be outside the city of Hailey, the new airport would be solely under county jurisdiction.

Several proposals have been advanced on how a new board should be structured and appointed.

Wood River Fire sets up scholarship

The Wood River Fire & Rescue Firefighters' Association is introducing a scholarship program for the 2009-10 academic year.

The association will award a scholarship of up to $500 to a Blaine County student or students seeking an education in health care or fire science. The association will award one new student each year, but recipients can reapply for one extra year. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher during their first year of study.

All completed applications should be received no later than July 17. The top 10 applicants will be invited to an interview during the week of July 27.

Green lecture series continues

The Light on the Mountains Center for Spiritual Living will present a lecture on Thursday with Hailey-based Native Landscapes partner Kelley Weston on creating a water-wise, food producing and beautifully landscaped yard.

The class will cover an introduction to environmentally friendly garden design, use of native and non-native drought-tolerant plants in the landscape, small-scale food production in the landscape, soil and water management and landscape maintenance and establishment.

The class will take place on Thursday, June 25, from 6-8 p.m. The green lecture series will continue every Thursday through Aug. 13. No class will be held on July 30. For details call 727-1631.

Calling all artists

The Open Room in Ketchum plans to host a special art exhibition and silent auction to benefit the Sun Valley Spiritual Film Festival, and artists are needed. Artists are encouraged to create and submit work that invokes the ideal of celebrating the human spirit. Works will be selected by a jury and then included in the public exhibition. Half the proceeds will go to the artists and the other half will go the Spiritual Film Festival.

Submission deadline is July 20. For details, visit www.openroomfurniture.com/SVSFF-exhibition.aspx or call Jennifer Jacoby at 622-0222.

Can you spare some change?

In an effort to boost fundraising, the Senior Connection has launched a campaign to collect spare change. Donations to the senior center have dropped and the organization is struggling to make ends meet. The campaign will run through June 29. A change-counting contest will take place on June 30, with the winner receiving a free river trip with members of the Senior Connection. For details call 788-3468.
