Plans made for SVMABL baseball season

Wood bat league starting in August

Sun Valley Men's Adult Baseball League (SVMABL) commissioner Curtis Bacca has announced plans for the 14th season of hardball in the Wood River Valley—and the seventh season of a wood bat league.

In an email to local baseball players and supporters Monday, Ketchum resident Bacca said the SVMABL plans an eight-week season in 2009 including playoffs and the "Wood River World Series."

The six-week regular season will run Monday, Aug. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 13 (no games over Labor Day weekend) followed by playoffs Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19-20 and the best two-of-three "World Series" Sept. 26-27.

Bacca said all teams will play 10 to 12 games at Hailey's Founders Field including the regular season and playoffs. The two teams that advance to the World Series will get to play 12 to 15 games.

For the first three weeks of August, games will be played Monday and Tuesday nights. Starting Aug. 20, all games through September will be Sunday afternoons.

Bacca said, "We have also started an SVMABL Facebook page for updates, info, scores and more. The address is facebook.com/pages/Sun-Valley-Mens-Adult-Baseball-League-SVMABL-Hardball-88851832300."

He added, "We are starting one week later than last year so not to conflict with slow-pitch coed softball. We want and need as many of those guys playing as possible. By starting Aug. 3, we can allow the American Legion players to play. This will help our numbers and add quality players.

"We need at least 48 paid players (12 per team) to have four teams. If we have fewer than 48, we'll go to three teams. So please go out and try to get new players or former players. If we have 42 players or less, we will have three teams of 14 players like last season."

Bacca urged prospective players and those returning from last summer to pay $165 player fees (same as last summer, check payable to SVMABL) as soon as possible.

Players can bring payment and last year's jerseys to either of the following locations: In Ketchum, to Paul Creighton at Kentwood Lodge, 450-9087; or in Hailey to Brian Nelson at Rocky Mountain Hardware on Airport Way, 720-7495.

Or contact Bacca at 720-0704 or cbacca44@yahoo.com. His mailing address is P.O. Box 1834, Ketchum.
