Blaine County youngsters came away with 11 podium finishes including three gold medals Saturday morning when the 2009 Hershey/Southern Idaho State track and field meet was held at Madison High School, Rexburg.
Repeat Girls' 11-12 state winner in the softball throw was Wood River Middle School student Ciceley Peavey with a toss of 127 feet-11 inches, which was about 12 feet farther than her first-place toss when state was held in Hailey last June.
Hailey's Riley Boice, the Girls' 9-10 state winner in the standing long jump last year, won the Girls' 11-12 title this time around at 6-6.75.
Also winning gold was the Wood River Middle School 4x100-meter relay foursome of Cooper Bailey, Quinn Guthrie, Brandon Dolenar and Ben Williams in 56.20 seconds.
Silver medals went to: Leo Corrales of Hailey in Boys' 9-10 standing long jump; Brittany Bowers of WRMS in Girls' 11-12 long jump and 400-meter dash; Kenya Schott of WRMS in Girls' 11-12 800m run; Nate Adamson of Carey in Boys' 11-12 800m run; and Ben Williams in Boys' 13-14 softball throw.
WRMS athlete Cooper Bailey was third in Boys' 13-14 standing long jump at state, and Brittany Bowers third in the 200m dash for Girls' 11-12.
The meet was open to kids ages 9-14 who finished first or second in their events at the local Hershey track meet sponsored by the Blaine County Recreation District during May in Hailey and Carey.
Winners at the state level Saturday can be a part of the regional team that travels to Hershey, Pa., to compete in the North American Final Meet Aug. 1. Their times and distances will be compared with other regional winners, and those who qualify for the North American will be notified by phone in the middle of July.
