Jane’s closes Ketchum store

Owner blames high rent, increased competition

Another Ketchum business has closed its doors.

Jane's, a paper and office supply store at Giacobbi Square in Ketchum, closed over the weekend. Owner Doug Brown cited multiple reasons for the closure, including increased local and regional competition, high rent, the recession, the economic impacts of the 2007 Castle Rock Fire, bank refinancing challenges and "paying too much for the business."

The Jane's Paper Place business was established 25 years ago. Brown and his wife Robin bought the business about five years ago, including retail locations in Ketchum and Hailey.

In December, Brown announced he was closing three other locations: RSVP in Ketchum and Polka Dot in Ketchum and Hailey.

In a statement sent to the Idaho Mountain Express at that time, Brown cited many of the same factors.

"We are proceeding to downsize our higher end offerings and expanding our value segments, consequently we don't need as much space," he said

This year is the 25th anniversary of Jane's and I wouldn't doubt that it makes it to 50. A small community needs a variety store with wide selection and convenience."
