Headline was misleading

I know headlines are supposed to attract attention, but I find the headline you chose for the June 12 story on the National Fire Plan study, "Study faults federal fire response," totally misleading. If someone does not read the article, the headline falsely implies that federal firefighters are not doing a good job of fighting wildfires. It is an implication that is not only unkind and unfair, but is the exact opposite to what the article actually says. To quote from the article: "Fire suppression is doing an outstanding job, but there is only so much they can do."

The salient point of the article is that to protect homes and communities from wildfire more emphasis needs to be placed on taking actions on private lands and helping homeowners "fireproof" their homes. The article mentions that we lock our doors to protect ourselves from crime, there are construction requirements in earthquake-prone areas and limits on building in 100-year flood zones. It is time now that homeowners and communities need to be considering actions they can take to protect themselves from wildfires. It does not say that firefighters are not responding to wildfires.

I think your headline leads the reader to believe that federal firefighters are not doing their job and that is a disservice to those men and women who put themselves on the line to fight wildland fires.
