Sports summary


Cyclists will ride Trail Creek on Father's Day

Whether you cross bike, road bike or mountain bike, the inaugural Town to Summit Hill Climb on Father's Day, Sunday, June 21 will spend a good part of its 12.4-mile length on dirt, Euro style.

Organizer Sean McLaughlin has announced details of the Father's Day bicycle race from downtown Ketchum to Trail Creek Summit east of Sun Valley. The course has 2,100 feet vertical and finishes on the hilltop (no racing down).

All ability levels are welcome and encouraged to ride.

Bicyclists will get off the mark with a neutral rolling mass start at 9 a.m. in front of The Elephant's Perch on East Ave. and be led out of town by the Sun Valley fire engine until arriving at Sun Valley Club.

Then it's "Game On" to the top of Trail Creek Road.

Categories are Open Male, Open Female, Junior (U-18) Male and Female. The $25 entry fee includes a one-day USA Cycling license. If you already have a license, the cost is $15. Register at the Perch anytime before June 21 at 8:30 a.m.

The raffle drawing for all racers will begin at 1 p.m. at Ketchum Town Plaza Park across from Giacobbi Square. Call The Elephant's Perch 726-3497 for more information.

Suns Golf Classic coming June 27

The second annual Suns Foundation and Sun Valley Suns Golf Classic is Saturday, June 27 at Elkhorn Golf Club.

Chris Benson of the Suns Foundation said "we are looking to get 22 to 25 groups of five like we did two years ago."

Format for the 3 p.m. June 27 shotgun start is five-person modified best ball—the fifth player in the group a current Sun Valley Suns hockey player or alumni star.

The cost of $140 per golfer includes a buffet. There will be a no-host bar and auctions. Hole sponsorship is $150 each.

Benson said, "We're looking for golfers to fill spots and to provide sponsorships in different ways—main tournament, dinner, hole sponsors, driving range or just donors—and we are also looking for great auction items. If you can't make that date but would like to make a donation, we can have a junior golfer play for you."

Cyclist Durtschi races in Tennessee

Max Durtschi, a member of the Hammer/CMG Cycling Team, raced in the Edgar Soto Memorial Race (ESMR) at Nashville, Tenn. May 31. The ESMR, designated by the USA Cycling Federation as a Junior World Championship qualifier, attracted elite junior racers from around the nation. Durtschi, who races as a Category Pro 1/2, placed sixth in the 77-mile road race.

A local high school student now living in Portland, Ore., Durtschi is training under the direction of Cycling Hall of Fame member Butch Martin. He will race in the eighth annual Elkhorn Classic Stage Race in Baker City, Ore. June 19-21. Durtschi, 18, then joins elite junior cyclists at the Rocky Mountain USA Cycling Athlete Development Camp in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Durtschi is being home-schooled with the support of Hailey's Wood River High School, Johns Hopkins' University and The Center for Talented Youth.

Idaho Vandals Pig Out is Saturday at Clear Lake

Right in time for Father's Day weekend and the U.S. Open men's golf tournament, the Magic Valley Vandal Boosters Club is hosting the 38th annual Vandal Pig Out on Saturday, June 20 at Clear Lake Country Club in the Snake River Canyon at Buhl. Golf check-in is noon, with the shotgun at 1 p.m. and dinner/auction 6 p.m.

Wild Rockies Series resumes with two races June 20-21

The 2009 Wild Rockies Series resumes Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21 with two mountain bike events in the Boise area.

The 12th annual Boise-to-Idaho City mountain bike tour begins Saturday at 8 a.m. at Old Fort Boise Armory and rolls up Rocky Canyon Rd., eventually reaching Clear Creek Lodge and Idaho City. Online registration at wildrockies.com ends Friday ($125 two day, $95 one).

The 20th annual Idaho City Excellent Adventure on a 17.1-mile course has its LeMans start Sunday at noon in Idaho City. All classes do the same loop with the same start. Online entry closes Friday, Pros $45 and other classes $36/$25.

Mountain bike camp for women at Sturtos in Ketchum June 20-21

The team at Sturtos Bike Shop in Ketchum has announced that the Rocky Mountain Dirt Series Women's MTB Cycling Camp is returning to the Wood River Valley for the fifth time June 20-21. The camp is open to 40 women looking to improve their skills and confidence on all types of trails. Beginner, intermediate and advanced riders are welcome. Cost is $325 per person.

This week's camp is a two-day format with skill sessions in the morning and trail rides in the afternoon. Lunch is provided each day. Visit dirtseries.com for complete information and registration.

Hailey's Trevor Brand plays for Boise select soccer team

Incoming Wood River High School freshman Trevor Brand, 14, of Hailey is playing for the Boise National Premiere youth soccer team at a regional tournament in Lancaster, Ca. June 14-21. Brand's team was undefeated before its California trip, having won the Idaho State Cup tournament May 22-25 at Pocatello.

Trevor's parents Bob and Joanne Brand have been driving their son to Boise two to four days per week so he can play on the Boise National squad. He is also a member of the Olympic Development (ODP) soccer program.

McCroskey leads junior golfers at Clear Lake CC

Wood River High School golfer Chance McCroskey was the medalist with an 18-hole score of 73 when the Idaho Golf Association staged its first junior tournament of the summer season June 8 at Clear Lake Country Club, Buhl.

Sun Valley Taekwondo black belts

Sun Valley Taekwondo instructors and candidates attended a Black Belt Promotional over the June 6-7 weekend at Idaho Taekwondo Training Center in Boise. Conducting the tests was a Black Belt panel led by Master Larry Duke (7th Dan).

Testing were Heidi Campeau (3rd Dan) and Cliff Stern (1st Dan). Both are Sun Valley Taekwondo instructors at The Community Campus in Hailey and the Wood River Community YMCA in Ketchum.

Hole-in-one at Valley Club

Doug Taylor has the distinction of shooting the first hole-in-one for the 2009 season at The Valley Club. He aced the seventh hole on the West Nine Friday, June 12, using a #5 hybrid from 142 yards. Witnesses were Paul Hansen, Tom Tierney and Ed Karner.

Fourth of July tennis tourney at Sun Valley

Tournament director David Perry has announced the details of the Lyle Pearson Fourth of July Tennis Championships presented by Sun Valley Resort. The dates are Friday through Sunday, July 3-5 on the Sun Valley courts. Sponsors are Sun Valley Resort, Lyle Pearson of Boise, Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters and Atkinsons' markets. Community School awards addition

Not included in the original Community School awards program list that was published in the June 10 edition of the Idaho Mountain Express was the name of Chase Hutchinson, winner of the Iconoclast Award.

Still openings for Community School volleyball camp

Openings remain for The Community School's summer volleyball camp for grades 5-12 at the Fish Tank in Sun Valley. Junior National volleyball coach Erikka Gulbranson will conduct the camp. The dates are Monday through Thursday, June 22-25 from 6-8:30 p.m. each evening. Cost is $25.
