Redfish Triathlon is a "go" Saturday

Organizers hoping for improved weather

Redfish Lake owner and race director Jeff Clegg is keeping his fingers crossed for milder and drier weather Saturday, June 20 at 9 a.m. for the start of the second annual Redfish Triathlon and Sprint Duathlon north of Ketchum.

"Everything is good to go," said Clegg on Monday. "The water temperatures won't be any colder than last year. They were 50 degrees today." Air temperature was 57 and cloudy, the Redfish Web site said.

"Right now, Thursday and Friday are looking real good," said Clegg about the forecast.

The registration deadline ($75 individual entries, $125 relay teams) is Friday, June 19 at Redfish Lake Lodge, with an online deadline of Thursday at redfishtri.com. Part of each entry fee goes to Stanley Community Library, Clegg said.

The event features an Olympic Triathlon (1000-meter swim, 40k bike, 10k run), Sprint Triathlon (500m swim, 20k bike, 5k run) and Sprint Duathlon (2-mile run, 20k bike, 5k run).

Saturday's happenings also will include the post-race wedding of former Redfish Lake marina manager Steve O'Connor and former Stanley-area river guide Shay Yost, about 4 p.m. at the lodge. Both plan to compete in the triathlon Saturday morning as well.

The post-triathlon marriage is appropriate, Clegg said laughing, because "marriage is a triathlon as it is."

Packet pickup occurs Friday at the lodge, along with a gourmet pre-race dinner from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will be live bluegrass music and many raffle prizes, Clegg added. A gourmet lunch Saturday is also included in the entry fee.

The lodge is filled for the weekend, Clegg said, but he had eight or nine campsites still available for participants. He said he has reserved Point Campground for volunteers.

Last year, there were 80 finishers in the Olympic Triathlon won by Scott Gray, 33, in 1.58:22 and Holly Walker, 33, in 2.03:23. In addition, there were 66 individual finishers in the Sprint Triathlon, 25 in the Long Course Duathlon and nine more in the Sprint Duathlon.

Along with team racers, last year's total Redfish entries numbered 210. Clegg estimated there were 160 athletes registered as of Monday. "We're down from last year. If we hit 200, I'll be happy," he said.

The 55-kilometer (34-mile) Long Course Duathlon won't be staged this year.
