Hailey to trim hazardous trees

Big, old cottonwood trees can sometimes pose a big risk to passers-by. With that in mind, the city of Hailey will begin cutting out some of the dead wood on cottonwoods in Hop Porter Park and Heagle Park today, June 12, before that wood comes crashing down on its own.

"Its typical for a city to undertake a hazard tree mitigation program like this when trees have been ignored in the past," said Hailey Tree Committee Chairwoman Jen Smith. Her group identified trees to be removed or trimmed based on standards set forth by the International Society of Arboriculture.

The city estimates that $20,000 worth of tree removal work will take place with the help of Davey Tree Surgery Co., Idaho Power Co.'s utility line clearing contractor.

The Hailey Tree Committee was formed in 2008 through the adoption of a tree ordinance.
