Airport’s 'mystery event' in planning

Manager says autumn event could attract hundreds of visitors

Rarely do Friedman Memorial Airport Authority monthly meetings depart from crisp, factual, data-driven discussions. But Friedman Manager Rick Baird left board members dangling in suspense when he declined to give details of a mystery event he said is being planned for the fall that might attract several hundred participants and fill valley hotel rooms.

Other than saying it probably would be staged this fall, Baird declined to provide any details.

In recent years, Friedman has promoted a number of events to make the airport more visible to the public. Its open houses with static displays of scores of old and new aircraft have attracted thousands of spectators.

Several years ago, the arrival and takeoff of three Marine F-18 Hornet jet fighters at Friedman packed shoulders of state Highway 75 with spectactors' cars.

And a recent fly-in for general aviation pilots to attend a mountain flying safety course was declared an unexpected success.

As for the latest "event," Baird said he would have an announcement in due course.
