For the second consecutive year, La Alianza is sponsoring a World Cup soccer tournament and fun family day Saturday, June 27 at Ketchum's Atkinson Park. Soccer teams are currently being accepted.
Millie Gaitan-Gonzalez, La Alianza executive director, said the World Cup tourney is the ancestor of an early-summer soccer tournament for Latino and other interested soccer players that was originated this decade by Tito Rivera.
Currently there are eight teams signed up ($200 per team). They will represent different countries at the tournament, Gaitan-Gonzalez said. It's a way of bringing different cultures together in a family setting at the park, she added.
More teams are invited. The registration deadline is Wednesday, June 17. On that day there will be a team meeting and tournament draw at 7 p.m. in Room 201 of The Community Campus, Hailey.
Games officiated by professional referees from the Magic Valley Soccer League will begin June 27 at 11 a.m. and continue on two fields through the afternoon. Prizes will go to the first-place team ($200 cash and trophy), to second place ($100 plus trophy) and to third place (soccer ball and a trophy).
Family activities during the day include free Zumba and aerobics classes, plus a bounce house and pinadas for kids.
