Why we ran

We are writing in response to statements made in the May 27 edition of the Express. Statements were made by current members of the school board questioning our "intent" in running for the open trustee positions. We want to be very clear about this. Our reasons for running have been consistently articulated from the beginning of this campaign.

We have run on a platform of greater transparency and openness in important school district decisions; more public involvement in school district matters; and spending "in" the classroom on curriculum excellence.

All decisions should focus on that first, then proceed forward.

In the Express' school board election forum on Wednesday, May 13, a number of questions to the candidates involved whether the process to hire Dr. Lonnie Barber was truly open and inclusive of the public, and who is best qualified to lead the school district going forward. We, as candidates, openly responded to those concerns. For anyone to insinuate that there is any personal bias against Dr. Barber or any nefarious reason that we campaigned to serve is just not accurate.

The ongoing evaluation of performance of the superintendent is a very important component of the school board's responsibilities. We will seek public input and transparency of process in this endeavor.

Our campaign was based on a positive and fundamental platform of "change" to insure that the public's voice is considered, and that the Blaine County School District continues to strive for curriculum excellence, one that will prepare our children for the 21st century world arena.

We look forward to working with our fellow board members in the future. We know we have common ground: We all want what's best for the children of the district. That will never be in dispute.
