Richards 10th in national steeplechase

Bellevue's Rachael Richards completed her Principia College track and field career by finishing 10th in the 3000-meter steeplechase event May 22 during the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marietta, Ohio.

A senior political science major and track and field captain at Principia in Elsah, Ill., Richards fell short of her goal of breaking her own school record. She finished nationals in 10:52.82, slightly below her school record mark of 10:44.88.

Wood River High School graduate Richards, daughter of Tim and Kim Richards, missed an automatic All-American spot by two spots. An eighth-place finish would have made her an All-American in her fourth year of college track competition.

Nevertheless Richards completed her career as one of the most decorated steeplechase runners in Principia's history—while also competing in volleyball in the fall season.

On May 15 in Naperville, Ill., she outran her competition in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:44.88 to qualify for nationals while breaking her own school record of 10:49.90, set last year as a junior.

Richards also set Principia school records in 800m, 1000m and 1500m runs during the indoor season, and in the 3000m run during the outdoor season. She studied abroad in New Zealand during her junior year and was so dedicated to the sport that she came back and qualified for nationals in steeplechase in 2008.

A 2005 Wood River High graduate, Richards set personal records as a senior at the State 4A track and field meet in the 1600m and 3200m runs. She was voted Great Basin Conference West Most Valuable Player in 2004 as Wood River's senior setter in volleyball.
