PTA’s involvement in board elections

The lady doth protest too much, methinks. Pam Gammon and Angie Telford write with contempt for school district attorney Adam King's "harsh" handling of the Wood River Middle School PTA endorsement issue—what a travesty. King was doing his job of telling a zealous PTA that it is against the bylaws of Idaho PTAs to endorse candidates and to use parent e-mail lists, as the Wood River Middle School PTA had done in support of school board candidates Steve Guthrie and Paul Bates.

The complaints of Gammon and Telford go on to provide cover for Guthrie and Bates, suggesting that the candidates had nothing to do with the endorsements, when in fact they are both officers of the Wood River Middle School PTA.

Further, the Wood River Middle School PTA did not interview any of the other candidates, nor wait for the scheduled public debates prior to endorsing Guthrie and Bates and sending their e-mail endorsement to hundreds of parents. By the time Mr. King got involved, the damage was done; he rightly insisted upon a retraction from the Wood River Middle School PTA and forbade any other PTA from making endorsements.

Gammon and Telford fail to own up to the facts above—so much for being open-minded and fair with the future of our children's education.
