Forest Service: Leash, pick up after dogs

By EXPRESS STAFF

Just in time for summer, the Ketchum Ranger District is reminding dog owners that they're serious about enforcing leash laws and dog waste pickup laws.

Sawtooth National Forest workers continue to get complaints about loose dogs and the waste they leave behind when pet owners neglect to clean up after their dogs, said Joe Miczulski, Recreation Forester for the Ketchum Ranger District, in a prepared statement.

"We receive complaints of unleashed dogs fighting or breeding, knocking over or frightening small children, jumping on people and cars and scratching both, knocking pet waste cans over, and stealing food from picnickers" said Miczulski.

Neglected animal waste, Miczulski said, isn't just smelly and unsightly, it also creates public health and water quality problems.

Pet waste pick-up bags and disposal cans can be found at 27 locations throughout the Wood River Valley. This program is a cooperative effort spearheaded by the Environmental Resource Center and volunteers.

Ketchum Ranger District personnel are issuing citations to irresponsible dog owners within 200 feet of the parking lots at several sites.

The fine for having an unleashed dog in a developed recreation site is $75 per dog, and for failure to properly dispose of your pet's solid waste is $125.
