Three locals finish Salt Lake City marathon

Three Hailey residents completed the sixth annual Salt Lake City Marathon April 18. Nearly 12,000 runners took part in the event that included the 26.2-mile marathon, half marathon and 5-kilometer run. The first nine miles of the marathon took place on a downhill grade, and it was mostly flat for the final 17 miles.

Finishing his first marathon was 28-year-old Cameron Lloyd with a final time of 3.48:22, good for 203rd of 1,192 finishers. He was the 162nd man and 29th in his 25-29 age group. Placing 283rd overall was Jeff Shiver, 38, of Hailey in 3.54:11, 50th in men's 35-39. In 800th place was Keith Nelson, 52, of Hailey in 4.55:50, which placed him 42nd in the men's 50-54 age class when runners came to the finish at Gateway Mall.

Male and female winners were Joseph Mutinda, 34, of Santa Fe, N.M. in 2.16:39 and Russian runner Nadezda Tuptova, 33, in 2.47:49, 11th overall.

Chandler saluted at Billings school

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation and Community School alumni Tyler Chandler of Ketchum was honored April 30 with the "Most Improved" men's ski racing award during the 2008-09 athletic awards ceremony at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mt.

Famous Idaho Marathon runners

Several Blaine County runners enjoyed a beautiful Saturday morning for a footrace May 16 during the 31st annual Famous Idaho Marathon sponsored by the Idaho Potato Commission in downtown Boise. There were several distances ranging from the 26.2-mile marathon test.

Completing the 13.1-mile half marathon were Barbie Royal, 48, of Carey in 2.11:38 (20th class) and Kristin Cassalia, 33, in 1.40:09 (8th).

The 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) runners included Ashley Bradley, 19, in 1.26:03 (21st class); Richard Boullon, 23, in 1.26:04 (7th); Lacey Thompson, 29, in 1.06:00 (33rd); Laurie Christian, 38, in 1.06:40 (25th); and James Bradley, 42, in 1.04:09 (15th).

Feldman top rider in George's BODE stage race

Ketchum's Richard Feldman, winning the Master 35-44 Male category by nearly seven minutes, also was the fastest cyclist overall in the George's Cycles BODE time trial stage race May 1-3 in the Boise area. Feldman's general classification time for the three stages was 1.12:53.01, well ahead of Pro Category 1-2 Male winner Kai Applequist (1.14:59.9).

John Swyers (1.45:15.1) of Ketchum placed third in Master 55-plus Male, Patty Puz (1:57.20.4) fifth in Female 3-4 and Matteo Jorgenson (1.50:05.7) third in Junior 15-18 Male for the stage race.

Runners train for U.S. Half Marathon May 30

In its fifth year on one of the country's most scenic courses, the U.S. Half Marathon in Sun Valley in Sun Valley on Saturday, May 30 will feature distances measuring 13.2 miles, 12 kilometers (7.4 miles) and 5k (3.1 miles).

The event starting at 9 a.m. May 30 for the half marathon takes place primarily along the Sun Valley and Wood River paved path and trail system. There will be prizes, and categories for individual and team participants. Kids can enjoy a short 11 a.m. running event at the staging area—Carol's Dollar Mountain Cabin in Sun Valley. Junior and adults have league bowling in Bellevue

The Junior/Adult League Trio will start Wednesday, June 3 at Mountain Sun Lanes, Bellevue. A short eight-week league session will consist of three-person teams made up of adults and youth (in grades 1-12). Registration and the league informational meeting will occur Wednesday, May 27 at 6 p.m. at the Bellevue alleys.

Rusch gets muddy in Dirt, Sweat and Gears

Ketchum firefighter and professional endurance athlete Rebecca Rusch, 40, placed second in the Solo Female Pro category May 9 at the Dirt, Sweat and Gears 12-hour mountain bike endurance race at Fayetteville, Tenn. Competing at the Cotton Mill Preserve private retreat, she completed nine laps on the 10.6-mile course in 11 hours, 7:14 minutes—and her bike was almost unrecognizable with mud afterward.
