Cutthroat boys bring home the tennis gold

Come through in clutch, 54-52 over Parma

Community School senior Courtney Hamilton won three girls’ singles matches at the May 15-16 State 3A tournament in Caldwell and placed third for the second straight year. She beat Parma senior Jenny Shaner twice in straight sets.

Riley Berman, one of seven Community School seniors entered in last weekend's State 3A tennis tournament at Caldwell, turned into a big factor with junior partner Jamie Jameson in making the Cutthroats state champions once again.

Berman and Jameson placed second in boys' doubles and earned 16 important points making The Community School boys' team champions by a slim 54-52 margin over the defending champions from Parma.

Cutthroat coaches Phil Huss, Chris Gripkey and John Kearney Jr. cheered as their boys' team improved 19.5 points from last May's second-place state tournament effort and earned the sixth state tournament first-place trophy in school annals.

Second-place Peter Atkinson and third-place Karl Wilander (boys' singles) amassed 28 points in that category. The third-place finish of juniors Tanner Flanigan and Ricki Eshman in mixed doubles also helped the Cutthroat boys over the top in the team standings.

The Cutthroats didn't win an individual championship during two days of exciting action at Vallivue and Caldwell high schools, but the 17 state qualifiers from Sun Valley piled up 94 points. It was the second highest total in history for a program that has averaged nearly 80 points in its last 13 state tournament visits.

Parma's 17 state entries earned a combined 108 points including 56 points in the girls' standings for the school's 11th state championship.

The Cutthroat girls took second place with 40 points as senior Courtney Hamilton was third in girls' singles, and the girls' doubles team of seniors Marin Shepardson and Emmy O'Reilly ended up second.
