New Recruits Prepare For Initial Attack

Wood River Fire & Rescue’s newest volunteers participated in an intensive “initial attack” drill Saturday. After arriving on the scene of a fire, they practiced pulling hose from the engine and crawling over simulated roof tresses (top) before perfecting their nozzle techniques by spraying water through simulated building construction (bottom). Under the watchful eye of lead instructor Mike Huntsman (left), a valley firefighter for 19 years, the 19 men and women completed their final day of practical training before becoming qualified volunteer firefighters. The eight-week course trains the recruits to meet national and state standards of fire fighting. Express photos by Jennifer Tuohy
