WRHS boys in the mix at state golf

Shooting for a trophy for the second consecutive year, the Wood River High School boys' golf team was right in the thick of things Monday after the first 18-hole round of the 36-hole State 4A golf finals at Rigby.

Moscow's boys, seeking their first state golf title since 1997 after a narrow playoff loss to Pocatello in last year's finals, led the way with 303 strokes. Second place was Pocatello with 314. Wood River had 315.

Wolverine junior Crockett Stearns shot a 73 Monday to tie with Emmett's Zerin Beattie for second place among individuals behind Moscow senior Chris Williams, 69, who is seeking his fourth consecutive boys' title. Stearns was Wood River's top individual last May at Jerome Country Club with a 36-hole 158, good for fifth place.

Other Wolverine scores Monday were sophomore Davis Hague 79, junior Jonathan Hobbs 80, junior Chance McCroskey 83 and junior Danny Sundali with an 86.

Team and individual awards at the Idaho High School Activities Association competition are based on two-day total scores. The final 18 holes were played Tuesday in expected windy conditions at Rigby.
