Hailey girls repeat as GBC tennis champions

Hamilton, Davis take girls’ doubles title

The veterans did their job, but the effort of relative newcomers lifted the Wood River High School girls' tennis team to its second consecutive Great Basin Conference 4A prep tennis championship Thursday.

Wood River sophomores Jessica Hamilton and Ellen Davis, winning three girls' doubles matches in straight sets, captured the only championship of the two-day, six-school tournament for Hailey. They're 23-2 this spring.

But Wood River wouldn't have grabbed the girls' team crown by a score of 64.5 to 60.5 over Century of Pocatello without excellent performances by three freshmen and two juniors, all unseeded going in.

They were freshman Sloan Storey, who won five matches for third place in girls' singles; unseeded juniors Tory Lakey and Lauren Reutter, fourth place in girls' doubles; and unseeded freshmen Raleigh Grossbaum and Hannah Baybutt, third in mixed doubles.

In all, coach Vicki Johnston's Wolverines (29 points girls' doubles, 25 girls' singles, 21 mixed doubles) qualified 13 of its 16 conference competitors for the 2009 State 4A tennis tournament Friday and Saturday, May 15-16 at Boise Racquet and Swim Club.

The other Wood River state qualifiers were: Senior Morgan Pike second place in boys' singles; senior Tanya Greenwood, second place in girls' singles; juniors Brendan Freund and R.J. Forgeon, second in boys' doubles; senior Alex Henning and soph Kelsey Brennan, fourth place mixed doubles.

Wood River won 27 of its 40 matches at Jerome last week and will be aiming for a trophy this weekend in Boise. Last year, Hillcrest of Idaho Falls swept the boys' and girls' team championships. Hailey ended up fourth in each division and earned its only state title from Scott and Morgan Pike, BD.

This is the 34th year Wood River has sent players to state.

Perennial southeastern Idaho tennis power Century is probably happy to see Hailey's Wood River High School leave the conference. Next year, the Wolverines join the new six-school 4th District 4A league with two Twin Falls high schools and won't have to qualify for state against the 5th District eastern Idaho teams.

Century won GBC titles in 2002-03 and 2006-07 before last year's first-time boys-girls split, when Century took the boys and Wood River the girls. Century was boys' team winner again this year, by a 55 to 38.5 margin over Wood River (12 boys' singles, 16 boys' doubles).
