Bates is involved

The school board determines policy for our teachers and the school administrators. It sets priorities for how and what our children learn. Over the next couple of years there is important work before the school board, including implementing the new strategic plan and making a smooth transition as Jim Lewis retires from his position as superintendent. It is essential that we take this time to elect thoughtful, informed citizens to the board. Approachable trustees who ask questions about policy and procedures are essential to making sound policy.

If you live in Zone 4 you have a candidate who understands the issues currently before the district and who will work hard to find the highest and best outcome for our students and their teachers. Paul Bates has been a resident of the Wood River Valley since the late 1970s. He has been active in the schools since his daughter entered kindergarten nine years ago.

Paul understands the complexities of running a classroom in which there are many different skill levels. He also understands that education means more than scoring well on federal tests. He will advocate for schools that emphasize creative thinking and problem solving, for teachers to have the freedom and skills necessary to teach to the whole child, and for schools that have the flexibility and resources to give our children a full experience—an experience that is as rich with good books and great music as it is with fascinating science projects and math problems.

Paul will press for procedures and decision-making processes that are transparent. He will be an advocate for parents, for students and for teachers. If you live in Zone 4, I urge you to vote for Paul Bates in the school board election on Tuesday, May 19.
