Prep athletes qualify for state this week

TCS golfer Atkinson makes state, Martinez sets TJ record

Local high school athletes tested their progress this week and tried to qualify for Idaho High School Activities Association state tournaments. Here's an update of how they're doing:

Community School golf

Community School senior Peter Atkinson carded an 18-hole score of 81 Tuesday at Canyon Springs Golf Course in Twin Falls to place second among all boys in the 4th District 2A/1A golf tourney.

Atkinson was the only Cutthroat golfer to qualify for the 2009 State 2A tournament May 11-12 at Sand Creek in Idaho Falls. His entire team finished just shy of making state—placing fourth of nine teams in Tuesday's competition. The top three boys' teams made state.

Other Cutthroat scores were junior Paul Davis 99, sophomore Dane Inman 108, senior Chet Stephens 115 and junior Bob Mollineaux 116. The Cutthroats (403) finished well behind first-place Castleford (354).

Wood River track and field

Freshman Kaitana Martinez set a new school record in triple jump, 33 feet, 9.25 inches, in placing second Wednesday during the Great Basin Conference meet at Minico High, in Rupert.

Martinez and another freshman, Cheyenne Swanson, qualified for the May 15-16 State 4A track meet in Boise. Swanson set a personal-best in discus with a third-place 97-3.

Qualifying in preliminary heats for Thursday's running finals were Delaney Fox with the fastest times in 100-meter dash, 200m dash, 100m high hurdles and 300m intermediate hurdles; Martinez in 100m dash and 300m hurdles; Grace Lagodich in high hurdles; and Lucy Paisley in 400m dash.

Wood River boys making it to state included Chase Caulkins (fourth place, 10:29.20) and James Paris (fifth, 10:31.90) in the 3200m run; and Rob Paris (second place 20-8) in long jump.

Community School tennis

Coach Phil Huss' Cutthroats will be seeking their fifth consecutive 4th District 3A championship and 11th in 12 years when they host the state-qualifying 4th District 3A tourney today, Friday, May 8.

The Cutthroats will start their quest Friday starting at 9 a.m. at Sun Valley Tennis Club. Huss said he's hoping 16 of the 18 varsity players make state.

Wood River tennis

Wood River High School's tennis team finished up its Great Basin Conference meet Thursday at Jerome High School. The Wolverines are the reigning Great Basin Conference champs and fourth place State 4A finishers back in 2008.

Making it into the championship finals for Wood River Wednesday at Jerome were Tanya Greenwood in girls' singles, Brendan Freund and R.J. Forgeon in boys' doubles, and Jessica Hamilton and Ellen Davis in girls' doubles.

State tennis tournaments are May 15-16 in the Boise area.

Camas girls lead in 1A track

Chocked full with fast seniors, the Camas County Musher girls jumped out to the first-day lead with 48 points in the 4th District 1A track meet at ISDB in Gooding Wednesday.

Senior Mollie McLam won the pole vault at 8-6 followed by Camas senior Mette Ericsson (8-6). Ericsson also qualified for the State 1A meet May 14-15 in Boise by placing second in long jump (15-7) and third in shotput (29-11.5). Musher senior Tessa Rumsey also made it to state (fourth long jump, 14-10).

With the top four individuals and best two relay teams earning state berths, Camas also sent its second-place medley girls' relay team of McLam, senior Toni Anne Wear, senior Lindsey Peterson and senior Hailey Gregory (1:58.3).

Meanwhile, the Camas County boys (32.5 points) were in second place behind Raft River of Malta (55) in the team standings after Day One on the ISDB oval. Junior Jeff Ellingson (145-4) won the discus easily and Mickenzie Boggs (40-4.5) took triple jump by 4 inches. Derek Walker of Camas also qualified for state track (fourth in triple jump, 39-5).
