Sports summary


Youth Football, Cheer Fair Thursday at middle school

Register for the 2009 Wood River Optimist youth football program and cheerleading Thursday, May 7 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the middle school in Hailey. The fair will feature a sloppy joe dinner. Coaches will have booths to provide information about the programs.

Programs are: Flag football for ages 7-8, cost $60; cheerleading ages 8-12, cost $75; and tackle football ages 9-12, $120.

The season runs Aug. 17-Oct. 17. First day of practice is Aug. 17 and games begin Saturday, Sept. 5. Please bring a copy of a birth certificate and insurance information. Visit the Web site at woodriveryouthfootball.com.

At the fair, you can also register for the Optimist Football Camp set for May 19-21. The Optimist Camp for kids in grades 1-6 is scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday, May 19-21 from 4-5:30 p.m. No previous football experience is necessary. The focus is on basic skill development and fun. High school coaches and players and Optimist coaches will staff the camp. Cost is $25.

Hansen, Bailey honored by Fourth District

Carey High School seniors Shelby Hansen and Kayla Bailey were recognized April 27 at the Fourth District honors banquet. They were two of 63 area students who maintained at least a 3.0 GPA and participated in Idaho High School Activities Association activities for four years. Hansen will also be recognized as an Idaho Distinguished Student by KTVB television channel 7 in Boise on the 6 p.m. news telecast May 21.

Coed Soccer League sign-ups are ongoing at Sturtevants in Ketchum and Hailey through the month of May. The season runs from June 10 through Aug. 12, with games on Wednesday evenings in Ketchum and Hailey.

YMCA Sprint Triathlon set for Friday and Saturday

Registration is ongoing for the first annual Wood River YMCA Sprint Triathlon (700-yard swim, 8.4-mile bike, 3-mile run) set for Friday and Saturday, May 8-9. The 14-lap swim portion will be held Friday starting at 3 p.m. at the YMCA pool in Ketchum. The bike and running legs will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. from Trail Creek Cabin. Wilson Creek is the bike turnaround. Cost is $15 YMCA members, $20 for non-members or $1 for a green entry (start at the YMCA and ride to Trail Creek Cabin). Wide Open golfers gather May 16

The Ketchum Wide Open miniature golf tournament returns Saturday, May 16.

One of spring's most popular events, the miniature golf tournament has golfers going to different bars in town, with participating establishments decorating holes in unique and challenging ways.

Bars and restaurants participating this year are The Sawtooth Club, The Roosevelt Grille, Casino, Grumpy's, Lefty's, Papa Hemi's Hideaway, Rico's Pizza & Pasta, The Cellar Pub, Smoky Mountain Pizza, Sushi on Second, Whiskey Jacques, and McClain's Pizza.

The cost to participate is $20 for a team of two. Tickets can be purchased at any of the participating bars on May 16.

Ketchum Coed Softball League meets May 13

The organizational meeting of the 2009 Ketchum Coed Softball League has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 13 from 5-6 p.m. at the Atkinson Park Recreation Center, Ketchum.

All team captains and managers should attend to discuss schedules, fees, possible rule changes and other league information. New teams are always welcome in the slow-pitch league, which has evening games in Ketchum from late May through the end of July.

Baseball tryouts set for May 16 in Hailey

The Wood River Baseball/Softball Association is conducting tryouts for the following summer programs at Hailey's Nelson Field on Saturday, May 16. They are:

9U Developmental: Introductory/developmental program introducing the young players to competitive tournament play. The short season runs June 1-28 and includes three tournaments.

10U Cal Ripken: Upper-level program for top 10U players. It runs from June through the Ray Nelson tournament in Hailey July 24-25 and will include a first-ever trip to the Cal Ripken state tournament in Idaho Falls on July 17-18.

12U Cal Ripken: Upper-level program for top 12U players. It runs June 1 through the July 24-25 Nelson Tournament and includes a first-ever trip to the Cal Ripken state tournament in East Boise July 17-18.

Tryouts at Nelson Field are: Ages 9-10 from 10-11:30 a.m. and ages 11-12 from 12-1:30 p.m. All pitchers/catchers will tryout between 11:30 a.m.-12 noon. Bring cleats, glove, bat and proper apparel. Be sure to arrive early for warm-ups.

Girls on the Run 5k run/walk and Healthy Living Expo May 16

Hailey's Lawrence Heagle Park in Della View Subdivision is the site of the sixth annual New Balance Girls on the Run 5-kilometer Run/Walk and Healthy Living Expo on Saturday, May 16.

People of all ages are invited to the park for a fun-filled day of running or walking, and obtaining information about healthy living. The kids will enjoy slides, bouncy houses, songs, games and face painting. There will be food. In addition, all 5k (3.1-mile) participants will be entered in a drawing for a bike donated by Sturtevants, and two tickets to the Sun Valley Center Summer Concert Series. Day-of-race registration is from 8-9 a.m. May 16 at the park for $25 adults, $15 youth and $50 for families. Visit girlsontherunwrv.org.

Runners train for U.S. Half Marathon May 30

In its fifth year on one of the country's most scenic courses, the U.S. Half Marathon in Sun Valley in Sun Valley on Saturday, May 30 will feature distances measuring 13.2 miles, 12 kilometers (7.4 miles) and 5k (3.1 miles). The event starting at 9 a.m. May 30 for the half marathon takes place primarily along the Sun Valley and Wood River paved path and trail system. There will be prizes, and categories for individual and team participants. Kids can also enjoy a short 11 a.m. running event at the staging area—Carol's Dollar Mountain Cabin in Sun Valley.
