Tennis teams seek state berths this week

CSchool, WRHS racquet teams ready to qualify

Weather permitting, this should be a big week for The Community School and Wood River High School tennis teams

Coming off their 9-3 varsity win over Wood River Friday for a season sweep over the Wolverines, coach Phil Huss' Cutthroats will be seeking their fifth consecutive Fourth District 3A championship and 11th in 12 years Friday, May 8.

The Cutthroats will start their quest Friday starting at 9 a.m. at Sun Valley Tennis Club. Huss said he's hoping 16 of the 18 varsity players make state.

Wood River will play its conference meet today, Wednesday and Thursday at Jerome High School. The Wolverines are the reigning Great Basin Conference champs and fourth place State 4A finishers back in 2008.

State tournaments are May 15-16 in the Boise area.

Friday, The Community School carried its unbeaten mark into its home match with Wood River. The Cutthroats swept mixed doubles and won five of the six singles matches to come out on top 9-3.

The Cutthroat #1 mixed doubles team of Tanner Flanigan and Ricki Eshman and #2 Riley Berman and Melissa Becker won their matches. Huss said, "We are very strong in mixed doubles this year and have dropped only one match."

Eric Runkel, Chet Stephens, Courtney Hamilton, Emma Wilander and Julianna Lamb were the Cutthroat singles winners—the girls in straight sets, and Runkel 6-3 in a third-set tiebreaker.

Other Cutthroat winners, both in #2 doubles, were Tim Kanellitsas and Jamie Jameson, and freshmen Teagen Palmer and Morgan Atkinson.

Wood River winners were Morgan Pike at #1 boys' singles, Jessica Hamilton and Ellen Davis at #1 girls' doubles, and Brendan Freund and R.J. Forgeon at #1 boys' doubles.

The Community School added another weather-plagued dual meet victory Monday, beating Twin Falls 11-1.
