They did manage to squeeze in a track meet amidst all the rain and wet weather last week.

It was the Northside Conference Championships at Carey's Derrick Parke Memorial Field. Thursday's eight-school meet rewarded depth and speed and saw many improvements.

Winning the Northside team championships for the third consecutive year were the Carey School boys and the Camas County girls from Fairfield. Both teams were loaded with depth and kids determined to give their best.

Individual high point awards went to Dietrich senior Jaren Stoddard (32.5 points) and Camas County senior Mette Ericsson (40).

Stoddard swept the sprints and anchored Dietrich's winning 4x200-meter relay. Swedish exchange student Ericsson won the 200m and 400m dashes and also captured the long jump and shotput for Fairfield.

In the team race, Carey and Camas County butted heads in both the girls' and boys' competitions and emerged with most of the points on the afternoon.

The Carey boys (22 hurdles, 52 field, 34 relays) won only four gold medals but boasted eight silvers to slip past Camas County (32 distances, 66 field, 26 relays) by a score of 151-142. Carey's winning difference came in the sprints and relays.

Carey's Joe Laidlaw took the 300m intermediate hurdles and Antonio Gamino won the 1600m. The Panthers also captured the 4x400m and medley relays. Senior Andrew Carlson exceeded his previous-best discus throw by nearly 13 feet and placed second in that event.

The six Camas County winners were Jeff Ellingson (shotput and discus), Bryan John (3200m), Mickenzie Boggs (triple jump), Andrew Simon (high jump) plus the 4x100m relay.

Panther coach Lane Kirkland said, "Our boys just had an overall great team effort. We tried to put boys in as many events as we could. I thought they really came together, worked hard and came along. They need to be proud of their accomplishments."

The Musher girls just had too much in the sprints (54 points) and hurdles (36) and outdistanced second-place Carey 184-154. Carey's girls had the edge in the distances (31) and field events (63) this year.

Kirkland said, "We had a good balanced day in scoring. To get second place is a great accomplishment. But Camas overpowered us in the sprints and hurdles. Congratulations to (Camas coach) Candice Smith and her team for a great job and a great season."

Besides Ericsson's four individual golds, Camas had five other first-place winners—Lindsey Peterson (100m), Toni Anne Wear (100m high hurdles), Katelyn Peterson (300m intermediate hurdles), 4x100m and medley relays.

Carey's Amy Ellsworth (30.5 points), last year's State 1A 1600m gold medalist, won the 800m run and triple jump, and Emily Andrews took the discus. The Panthers also won the 4x400m relay with Nicky Gomez, Kelsey Green, Ellsworth and Micaela Adamson.

Next is the state-qualifying District Four 1A meet May 6-7 on the ISDB oval in Gooding. Qualifying for state from the 1A Fourth District (Northside/Southside) will be four individuals in each event and two relays, plus at-large berths.
